I had a bouquet of red roses delivered to my office. It was a gift from my GF. I liked the idea; in fact it felt good about she doing this for me. I didn't know how to handle the roses and felt a little taken back, but i managed.
References :
My husband of 20 years is always giving me roses for birthdays, anniversaries and the Valentine's Days. So, one year I decided to return the favor, and sent him a gorgeous bouquet of burgundy gladiolas to his office on his birthday. I always thought that gladiolas were kind of male flowers, and besides he always admired them, when he saw them. He was surprised and touched by my thoughtfulness, but asked me never do it again. Smile. Evidently there were some cutting remarks from his male co-workers made on a subject of men and flowers, which could have been inspired entirely by envy. However, in a future I found other ways to express my love for him without making him feel uncomfortable on his special day.
References :
I did once. It was one of the most useless gifts ever. It was the boutineer. It was going away gift. Why not a 6 pack, a book, a pair of gloves?
References :
I don't know if there is a societal preconception or not, but I don't much care for receiving flowers as a gift from anyone of any gender/age (except from a child or someone who may not have the means to obtain anything particularly useful).

I mean really, what can you do with them? You put them in a vase with water and set it on the coffee table. It's there, it doesn't do anything, and then it dies in a week.

It's about utility, not just the thought that counts. I would much more appreciate a gift that I can actually use and enjoy, like a stereo or a BBQ grill or a tank.

It's not like I won't say "thank you" and I won't consider it not masculine. I just think flowers are kind of a useless gift.
References :
Troll, they feel great about it. In fact I send my boyfriend flowers to his job every month when he gets his paycheck. It's coincidental I swear!
