Major Ten Marriage Speech Etiquette Suggestions

Tuesday Jul 6, 2010

For modern marriages there are no stern rules as to who should speak at the reception.  The following people may speak at a wedding: Father or Mother of the bride, the best man, the bridesmaid-in-chief, a groom, the bride, parents-in-law, and bridesmaids.  It is not odd for a couple of the groomsmen or a couple of the bridesmaids to talk at the same wedding.

Most people are intimidated at the idea of public speaking.  Furthermore, the majority are doubtful of the correct wedding speech etiquette which compounds public talking anxiety.

This article will highlight some useful pointers to prepare and deliver a wonderful speech.

The formal order of the speeches is:

1.  Dad of the bride

2.  The groom

3.  The best man

In modern times, it is not unusual for the bride, maid of honor or even some guests to say a few words.

The speech segment of the reception is generally held after the meals but there is no reason why the speeches can’t be before the meal.

For wedding speech etiquette follow these top 10 tips:

1.  If you are the one being toasted never raise your glass or drink from your glass till the toast is finished and other guests have sipped their drink.

2.  No jokes that have ethnic or racial connotations.

3.  Avoid any profane language.

4.  Don’t make any reference to any past / future lovemaking between the couple – as an example – the honeymoon.

5.  Don’t mention prior weddings.

6.  Don’t gnaw gum; put your hands in your pocket or shuffle from side to side as you deliver the speech.

7.  Don’t drink more than a glass or two of alcohol before the speech.

8.  Avoid any “sore” subjects like a recent death in the family.

9.  Always stand when delivering the toast.

10.  Don’t hit a glass with a spoon to gain attention.  It is more polite to stand and hold your glass and wait for silence.

If you follow the ten tips above you will have no reason to be concerned about following the right marriage speech etiquette.
