Creative Wedding Centerpiece Designs

Saturday May 14, 2011

Mismatched and eclectic is a very hot trend for weddings. Brides (and their guests!) are weary of the matchy-matchy kind of wedding. Each of these non-matching centerpice designs has a lot of character.

Many of the prettiest mix and match centerpiece sets are also a snap to make. Mismatched is almost always easier for the DIY bride than trying to create a dozen of the same exact floral display. Antique tins arranged in clusters look very charming. Look for old tea tins or other tin canisters with pretty and interesting labels painted on them. Use three or four tins of varying shapes and sizes per reception table, and fill them with single blossom arrangements in a few colors or mix colorful wildflowers among the different tins. The centerpieces have a delightful simplicity. They would be so cute for a wedding with a lot of handcrafted details, such as letterpress wedding invitations and handmade custom bridal jewelry.

The couple with a literary flair will love this centerpiece idea. A great idea for an unexpected centerpiece is to create a tower of anique books. It will be a lot of fun to find the old books in second hand shops and yard sales; choose ones which have good looking hardcovers (no paperbacks!) and romantic motifs. A really neat idea is to group books by theme or author for each table, ie, Russian novelists, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, etc. Carry the concept to the next level and use your favorite literature to inspire the table names. To dress up the books, place tiny tea cups with a single flower on a few of the books in each group. An original centerpiece such as this one will get your guests talking.

Tall and short vessels work beautifully in combination. The idea can work just as well for formal weddings as casual ones. For instance, let’s say that you were planning an evening wedding with lots of crystal custom bridal jewelry, flowing champagne, and fine cuisine. A gorgeous design ideas is to use a high low combination of centerpieces, some with candles and the others with flowers. This type of plan strikes a nice balance, because the tall centerpieces feel more grand, but the low ones have more flowers. This way no table of guests feels like they got the second tier centerpiece.

If you are planning a rustic wedding, you will have many terrific options for mismatched centerpieces. You can really mix and match vessels and flowers, so long as they are similar in flavor. You could combine Mason jars with small galvanized tin pails for a rustic summer wedding. Fill them with assorted wildflowers or daisies for a great casual reception look. A cozy barn wedding is always wonderful for September, October, or November. Imagine you were planning a fall barn wedding with a fall colors theme carried throughout the tablecloths, custom bridal jewelry, and the wedding cake. Eggplants, white gourds, and pumpkins can be turned into vases. Set out an assortment of your natural vessels on each reception table and fill them with seasonal mums in red, orange, and yellow. Everyone will enjoy the mismatched style of the centerpieces!

Truly, the designs for non-matching centerpieces are limitless. Create collections of hobnail vessels, decorate wooden boxes, or arrange several types of flowers in one color. Your centerpices will defiinitely be unique and appealing!
