What is it with "label" weddings?

Monday Jun 28, 2010

Disney, Nascar, John Deer, Tiffany… the list goes on

Do brides really think that advertising for free commercial brands will make their wedding look elegant?

Is wrapping an empty box with Tiffany-like blue paper and a white ribbon as a centerpiece supposedly looks fancy? Really?

What is your take on weddings that use a commercial label as their "theme"?

Once you commercialize it no longer is a family or intimate affair…it becomes kitchy ….it’s not even unique.

I am waiting for these themes…

Dr. Pepper or Coca Cola-things go better with Coke.

Preparation H or Milk of Magnesia for the older, mature couple

Bayer Aspirin (the way they blast music, why not…everyone leaaves with a headache)

Jack Daniel’s….the drunks’ll love that.

Tampax….interesting decorating for that one. Ditto Midol.

Trojans….do I need to elaborate? For folks who love ‘balloons’

Valvoline for the Car Crowd.

Oscar Meyer Franks- " Oh I wish I had, I mean I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Weiner….."

Hamburger Helper.

‘Lays’ potato chips….can’t ‘eat’ just one *rolls eyeballs*.

K-Y jelly…ahem.

Hey, considering the kind of food often served…..Pepto Bismol….Benefiber….Pepcid AC….Tums…
Alka Seltzer….’Plop plop, fizz, fizz oh what a cute couple dey is….."

Mickey D’s so the bride can have it all ‘her way’……perfect for the Bridezilla.

WALMART….now who wouldn’t LOVE a Walmart themed wedding!

I’m just waiting.

Does the corporate theme continue on into the wedding night?

I’m not really a fan of big weddings, in general. I got married in a courthouse with just a few family members and some friends.

The Disney/commercial weddings, I think, is more about the person planning the wedding then it is for everyone else. It IS the bride’s day so… naturally, it is up to them. I personally think most of it looks tacky, but if they do it correctly – it CAN look nice.

I don’t care for them at all. I think it makes the wedding look and feel, well, commercial. Like you’re sitting in an advertisement for that product.

I also just do not care for themed weddings in general, I think it takes everything away, that makes a wedding yours. As you determined before in a previous question, all weddings are unique and similar, at the same time. However, if everything is Nascar, Tiffany, ect, then there is really nothing of the bride and groom in the decor. Just a bunch of ugly paraphernalia better suited to a bar, or home entertainment room. It isn’t elegant, or cute, or unique in anyway.

Frankly, as near and dear to my heart as Disney is, I might actually turn around and walk out, if I ever enter a wedding/reception themed in Disney. If I wanted to sit in amongst animated, fictional characters, I would visit a nursery, or go play with my nieces for a day.

All and all, I think themes are generally bland, and boring. I’ve yet to go to an "original" themed wedding.

Well, I don’t really know about the labels – but I think people do the box centerpiece as a "modern and affordable" way to add a splash of color to the table. I considered this due to budget and my personal simplistic style, but I never considered it to be fancy.

I think that there is a right way and a wrong way to do these sorts of weddings. For example, I have seen very elegant Disney themed weddings, where you barely noticed it, but it was there. Unfortunately, most brides who attempt this fall short and it ends up looking more like a child’s birthday party.

HOWEVER, all that matters is that the couple likes it. Bad decor does not make or break a good wedding. A couple that are obviously in love, good food, friends, family and fun make a good wedding :)

Personally I think themes are ok, if it’s along the lines of color scheme or flowers. It looks ridiculous otherwise, a wedding isn’t suppose to resemble a 7 year old birthday party- I understand that some brides want a fun wedding but going with a Disney Princess Wedding (or otherwise) is just a little bit childish. I think if they want Nascar or something like that as part of their wedding incorporate a groom’s cake.

I think a bride and groom can use anything they want as a theme and it’s not my business. And sometimes it helps with decor ideas because they DO use a theme. It’s their business and not mine.

I am honestly not familiar with this and I’m glad that I’m not! I have to admit, I never understood the fascination with "Tink" that seems to dominate at Walmart stores everywhere.

What does a "John Deere" affection say about the couple? Are they Green Bay fans who had their colors highjacked and thought a cheesehead theme was too cheesy?

The Tiffany thing does sound familiar, but the inference of classiness doesn’t make it, in my book, and I tend to think that you agree.

I hate Nascar, and I can not see in any what how that would make for an appropriate wedding theme…I’ve never been to a wedding like that anyway, so I guess I’d have to see it done. Probably like most other things, they can be done well, or they can be done poorly…

I don’t even really get the whole use of a theme. Can’t someone just have a wedding-does it really have to even get into anything more?

I think its bizarre that Disney or John Deere is how they identify themselves. If weddings are a reflection of the couple, then what does that say about them? That they identify with a packaged product, not the person that they really are?

It also shows a real lack of imagination and taste. Anyone can stick a pumpkin carriage on a wedding invitation and call it a fairytale princess theme, but only those with real taste can create a storybook feeling without being so obvious and direct.

I really like aqua and white, especially for a beach or lakeside wedding. Its a shame that so many people now associate this color scheme with Tiffany. You would have to not use any white ribbon at all to pull off an aqua and white scheme, without it being called Tiffany. Too many brides have used Tiffany theme and now it is ruined for those who like aqua.

In the case of Disney and Tiffany, I think it is just girls who dream of some fairytale life and know they will never have it but want to indulge some fantasy on their wedding day.

In other case of Nascar and sports teams and Army camo, it is embracing who they are and telling the world they just dont care.

Im baffled by it. I dont need to tell all my guests at my wedding who my favorite band is, or what kind of car my husband drives.

People can do what they want but I’m personally not a fan of them. A lot of them usually end up looking like children’s birthday parties.

Disney bothers me in particular because I can’t imagine, as an adult, indulging in the whole "I’m a princess" fantasy.

I’m so tired of seeing Tiffany blue in weddings I could throw myself off a cliff if I ever see another one. And NASCAR… don’t get me started.

I have no problem with Disney weddings, though, especially if the couple gets married there. Disney’s all about the guy getting the girl and living happily ever after. Fairy tales are for adults as much as kids, because we share them with our children and remember them fondly. Would I have a Disney wedding? No, probably not. But I think they’re cute. And speaking as someone who worked there for a semester, it’s sooo freaking cute seeing a happy couple with the bride & groom mouse ears.
